Producing specialty coffee and new directions of Dak Lak

Dak Lak is considered as the capital of Vietnamese coffee because the area and output of this crop are at the top of the country.

However, the consumption and creation of added value from production and trading of coffee products still face many difficulties.

Currently, Dak Lak province has 203,063ha of coffee, of which the area for products is 187,940ha. The coffee industry has created stable jobs for over 300,000 direct producers and nearly 200,000 people related to coffee trees.

Although still leading in the country in terms of coffee area and output, Dak Lak's form of production organization is still mainly smallholder farming, small-scale and fragmented. Poor rural infrastructure, lack of drying yards, warehouses, processing equipment ... have greatly affected the quality.

Find new directions
Ta Duy Thanh's family, in Ea Tan commune, Krong Nang district has 3ha of coffee. In the past, he planted traditional methods, depending heavily on the weather and market prices. In 2015, Mr. Thanh decided to join the Ea Tan Cooperative to develop specialty coffee. Unlike normal coffee production and processing, high-class coffee line - specialty coffee grown and processed requires more elaborately, but gives him a value 3 times higher than production. usually, common, normal.

“Specialty coffee must be ripe to 90%, previously in the favorable direction of picking greener, since participating in this specialty coffee program, it must be ripe 90% or more. In addition, the right amount of fertilizer must be applied, reducing labor and costs, ”Thanh said.

To make specialty coffee, in addition to natural conditions, farmers must strictly follow the production process from caring, harvesting to preliminary processing and preserving products. In return, the price purchased by enterprises is about VND 10,000 / kg higher. Due to the strict implementation process, so far Dak Lak province has only a few businesses and households engaged in producing specialty coffee.

Dak Lak Import - Export Co., Ltd 2 - 9 is a pioneer in producing specialty coffee. Initially, with the brand "Fine Robusta Buon Ma Thuot", the company supplied about 30 tons of specialty coffee products with prices increasing about 40% compared to the market price.

Mr. Le Duc Huy, Deputy General Director of September 2 Import and Export Company Limited, said that Dak Lak was only initially exploiting this great potential, with an area and production not much. In order for Dak Lak specialty coffee to be widely known in the market, both people and businesses must pay more attention to facilities and techniques together with formulating a well-developed development policy to improve the comprehensive quality of Quality and reputation of Vietnamese coffee.

According to Mr. Huy, to expand further, we need to affirm that the quality of Vietnamese coffee is not only in quantity but also in quality, then big consumer markets are buying specialty coffee. In other countries in Africa, Indonesia, in India ... just came to Vietnam, considering Vietnam as a place to supply specialty coffee of the world. When the demand is expanded, we will boldly push the source of production.

Find ways to improve the value of Vietnamese coffee
According to Trinh Duc Minh, Chairman of the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association, the specialty coffee market was formed about 30 years ago, first in the US, then Europe, Japan ... Market share of this type of coffee accounts for about 2% of total world coffee production. However, the market share is low, but it brings high added value, 5 to 10 times more depending on the type of coffee.

In Dak Lak, in the 2017-2018 crop, the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association collected 130 coffee samples in the raw material area for experts to evaluate the quality. As a result, more than 10% of coffee samples have a test score of 80 points or more and can produce specialty coffee products.

“For a long time, we have exploited the common commercial coffee segment, sustainable coffee mining, now specialty coffee is the array we exploit. In order to enhance the value of Vietnamese coffee, it is important to connect trade directly between producers and those who want to buy specialty coffee, ”Mr. Trinh Duc Minh shared.

Mr. Y Giang Gry Ni Knong, Vice Chairman of Dak Lak People's Committee, said that coffee is the key crop that brings high value in Dak Lak, the province's viewpoint is not to increase the coffee area but focus on replanting and applying take measures to improve productivity, output and quality to meet export demands. The province focused on inviting investment in deep processing, seeking new markets, prioritizing loans for businesses, loans for replanting, investing in science and technology to improve the quality of Dak Lak coffee in particular and coffee. Vietnam's coffee products have exported to more than 80 countries and territories, accounting for 14.2% of the global coffee export market share, especially roasted and soluble coffee exports accounted for 9 , 1% market share, creating opportunities as well as prospects for the coffee industry as Vietnam penetrates deeper into the international market through the signed free trade agreements.
